The 17th Special Olympics Korea National Summer Games, the largest sports festival for people with developmental disabilities nationwide, will be held in Incheon from the 16th to the 19th.
This event is officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and is held every four years, rotating nationwide annually except in years when the World Summer Games are held. It is the world's largest international sports event for people with developmental disabilities, providing opportunities for challenge and the joy of achievement.
A total of 2,479 participants will compete in 15 events (including 3 demonstration events) across more than 10 venues, including Incheon Munhak Stadium.
In particular, this year’s games will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games and Para Games, with the torch lighting ceremony taking place on the 16th in front of Incheon City Hall, rekindling the excitement and passion of that time across the venues once again.
During the event, a policy forum on "Employment Support Measures for People with Developmental Disabilities," hosted by the Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled Employment Development Institute, will be held as a side event. Additionally, health promotion programs aimed at improving athletes’ health management skills and early disease detection will be provided.
Yoo Jung-bok, Mayor of Incheon, stated, "We will do our best to ensure that all athletes, coaches, and volunteers participating in the games can enjoy the event," adding, "I hope this becomes a festival of friendship and harmony through sports."
