Yeongdeungpo-gu Dangsan Park Oxygen-Generating 'Ikki Garden' Established to Practice Carbon Neutrality

Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced on the 9th that it has created a unique "Moss Garden" in Dangsan Park, located opposite the district office, and opened it to residents.

The Moss Garden is a healing space that revitalizes the old ecological pond within Dangsan Park, where various types of moss and trees harmonize to create a mysterious atmosphere as if one has entered a primeval forest.

The existing ecological pond had been difficult to maintain and costly due to frequent breakdowns of underwater pumps and aging facilities. Especially during the hot summer, numerous complaints arose about flies and mosquitoes around the pond.

In response, considering the location characteristics of Dangsan Park adjacent to the road, the district transformed the ecological pond into a living, open green space using moss, which has a carbon reduction effect.

The moss, the theme of this garden, absorbs greenhouse gases, fine dust, and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and releases oxygen, making it increasingly valuable as a plant to respond to the recent climate crisis.

The district maximized the advantages of moss to create the garden, improving urban aesthetics and practicing carbon neutrality.

Additionally, to create the Moss Garden, the district carefully examined the surrounding environment of Dangsan Park and selected the most suitable moss species such as Teulgiteol-moss and Seori-moss, planting them along with various trees and stones around the moss to complete a garden full of a primeval forest feel.

On August 9th, the district celebrated the completion of the Moss Garden with a plaque unveiling ceremony, a Moss Garden tour, and a plant planting event with residents, officially introducing the Moss Garden to the public.

Declaring "Garden City Yeongdeungpo," the district is shedding its image as an old, worn-out urban area without mountains and is being reborn as a garden city. Various garden projects are underway, including the opening of the Garden Support Center and the creation of the Mullae-dong Flower Garden, with the Moss Garden project being part of these efforts.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, "Moss, a green plant, not only produces oxygen but also provides psychological stability to viewers, allowing them to experience the healing effects of the forest," adding, "We will continue to create unique, eco-friendly gardens that can only be seen in Yeongdeungpo-gu, making healing spaces where anyone can easily enjoy relaxation."
