8 Weeks of Theoretical Education, Home Training, Lunchbox Experience, and Foot Care Practice
Continuous Glucose Monitor Provided, Free Support for Related Tests Including Glycated Hemoglobin
Songpa-gu (District Mayor Seo Gang-seok) will operate the ‘Diabetes Intensive Management Program’ for newly diagnosed diabetes patients starting in August.
The district announced that in 2021, there were about 41,000 diabetes medical users, accounting for 6.3% of Songpa-gu residents. Including those who were diagnosed but do not take medication or are unaware of their condition, the population requiring management is expected to be even larger.
In the case of diabetes, managing diet and lifestyle habits is very important in addition to medication treatment.
Accordingly, the district will run the ‘Diabetes Intensive Management Program’ at the Songpa-gu Public Health Center to enhance the self-management abilities of diabetes patients.
The program targets patients diagnosed with diabetes within the last 5 years who have uncontrolled blood sugar levels in the early stages of diabetes (glycated hemoglobin 6.5% or fasting blood glucose 126mg/dl or higher).
The program lasts a total of 8 weeks. After 3 weeks of diabetes theory education, the next 5 weeks include exercise (home training, strength training), diabetes lunchbox experience, meal diary writing and counseling, and diabetes foot care practice. Participants can learn various practical methods to manage diabetes in daily life.
Participants will be provided with continuous glucose monitors to help manage diabetes effectively. Additionally, fasting blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin tests before and after the program are offered free of charge.
The program will be conducted in two sessions from August 9 to November 22. Each session will recruit 20 participants; the first session is fully booked. Recruitment for the second session will take place in September. Applications can be made by visiting the Metabolic Syndrome Center on the first floor of Songpa-gu Public Health Center or by phone.
Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, said, “Through the ‘Diabetes Intensive Management Program,’ we will actively support residents in developing proper diabetes self-management skills,” adding, “We will continue to plan beneficial programs that help residents’ health and create an environment where anyone can conveniently access various public health services.”
