Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon reiterated his intention to host the 2036 Summer Olympics in Seoul on the 11th.
In a post on Facebook that day, Mayor Oh said, "We will gather the national energy and spirit from this Olympics and move forward vigorously toward another Seoul Olympics," adding, "After touring the early stages of the Paris Olympics this time, I gained confidence that Seoul can do even better." Earlier, on the 26th of last month (local time), Mayor Oh attended the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, toured the venue, and cheered on the delegation.
Mayor Oh cited infrastructure as a competitive advantage for Seoul. He explained, "In a trend where sustainable, low-carbon, and low-cost Olympics are becoming more important, Seoul is the optimal location," adding, "The infrastructure from the 1988 Seoul Olympics remains intact, and the Jamsil Olympic facilities will be modernized and reborn as a sports and MICE complex by 2031."
He also expressed confidence, saying, "If Seoul wins the bid, it will be an almost 100% profitable Olympics." Mayor Oh recalled, "I remember that Thomas Bach, the IOC President, showed great interest when he heard this explanation two years ago," emphasizing, "Reliable public safety is also a major strength of Seoul, and the Han River, which is much cleaner and more beautiful than the Seine, will attract the world's attention for various reasons if the Olympics are held."
Previously, Mayor Oh visited Lausanne, Switzerland, to attend the 2022 World Union of Olympic Cities (WUOC) annual meeting and held a private meeting with IOC President Thomas Bach.
The 2024 Paris Olympics will conclude with the closing ceremony at 9 p.m. on the 11th (4 a.m. on the 12th Korean time).
