Challenging for First Medal in Final at 00:30 on the 11th
Jeon Woong-tae (Gwangju City Hall) and Seo Chang-wan (Korea Armed Forces Athletic Corps) advanced to the men's modern pentathlon final at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
On the 10th (Korean time) at the Palace of Versailles (Modern Pentathlon Stadium) in France, Jeon Woong-tae scored 1515 points in the men's modern pentathlon semifinal of the Paris Olympics, securing a spot in the final as the 2nd place in Group B. Seo Chang-wan also advanced to the final by placing 5th (1503 points) in the same group.
The modern pentathlon consists of five events?fencing, swimming, equestrian, athletics, and shooting?all performed by a single athlete. On the first day, 36 competitors each take turns competing in the fencing ranking round, followed by the semifinals and finals.
In the semifinals and finals, the equestrian obstacle course, the 'survival' style fencing bonus round, the 200m swimming race, and the laser-run (3200m combined running and shooting) take place simultaneously, with rankings determined by the total combined score.
Seo Chang-wan, who ranked 10th (225 points) in the fencing ranking round the previous day, achieved a perfect score of 300 points in the first equestrian event by completing the course without knocking down any obstacles.
Jeon Woong-tae, who was 4th (235 points) in the fencing ranking round, earned 286 points in the equestrian event and added 2 points in the fencing bonus round.
In swimming, Jeon Woong-tae finished 1st (1 minute 59.90 seconds) and Seo Chang-wan 2nd (2 minutes 00.79 seconds), earning 311 and 309 points respectively. With a combined total of 834 points, the two athletes surged to the top of Group B and started the laser-run first, with staggered start times based on their previous event scores.
Jeon Woong-tae, who was watching for opportunities within the top three until mid-race, took the lead with precise shooting in the fourth shooting stage and, after a fierce battle with Sato Daishu (Japan), secured 2nd place to advance to the final. Seo Chang-wan also achieved a strong result and joined the final.
They will challenge for medals in the final, which will be held at 12:30 AM on the 11th.
