Ukraine has achieved a significant advance of up to 10km in the clashes with Russia that began in Russia's Kursk Oblast. This engagement is considered the largest battle on Russian soil since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.
The U.S. think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported, based on battle footage, that Ukrainian armored vehicles have been advancing along a road 10km away between June 6 and 7. They analyzed that at least two defensive lines and one stronghold were breached. There are also claims that approximately 45 square kilometers of territory have been captured.
On June 6, Ukrainian forces deployed armored vehicles into Kursk Oblast, a northeastern border area adjacent to Ukraine's Sumy Oblast. This engagement marks the largest military clash on Russian soil since the war in Ukraine began in February 2022.
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that Ukraine lost 660 personnel and 82 vehicles in this area. They also stated that Russian forces are conducting operations to repel the Ukrainian troops.
Andrey Belostotsky, the deputy governor, told local media, "The enemy has not advanced even 1 meter and is instead retreating. We hope to stop the enemy within a few days."
Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized the Ukrainian advance as a "large-scale provocation that attacked civilian residential areas and ambulances."
