Military: "One North Korean Resident Defects Crossing Han River Estuary Neutral Zone" (Comprehensive)

A North Korean resident was confirmed to have defected to the South by crossing the North-South neutral waters of the Han River estuary on the 8th.


The Joint Chiefs of Staff stated on the same day, "Our military secured the custody of an unidentified person presumed to be a North Korean individual and handed them over to the relevant authorities."


The Joint Chiefs added, "Since the relevant authorities are currently investigating the process of moving south and the defection status, we cannot provide detailed information."


According to the Joint Chiefs, no unusual movements of North Korean troops have been identified so far.


At the National Assembly Defense Committee plenary session on the same day, Defense Minister Shin Won-sik responded to related inquiries by saying, "The competent authorities are currently investigating," and "I received the first report, but due to legal regulations, I cannot disclose detailed information."


Meanwhile, it is known that the North Korean resident crossed the North-South neutral waters of the Han River estuary, arrived at Gyodongdo, and then expressed their intention to defect.
