Dong-A University Environmental Health Center Conducts Survey to Establish Environmental Health Monitoring System

Environmental Survey in Vulnerable Areas of Western Busan

Resident Exposure Assessment and Health Counseling... Enhanced Monitoring System

The Busan Environmental Health Center, operated by Dong-A University (Director: Professor Hong Youngseup), is conducting resident exposure assessments and health consultations to establish a proactive environmental health monitoring system.

According to the Dong-A University Environmental Health Center, data from 2022 on vehicle traffic volume (Busan City Transportation Bureau, Public Transportation Policy Division) showed that the western region of Busan had the highest freight truck traffic, with the Gamjeon Intersection recording the largest volume.

Assuming that local residents may be exposed to environmentally induced diseases caused by road-mobile pollutants, the center will conduct resident exposure assessments and health consultations in the Eomgung-dong area, which falls within a 2 km radius of Gamjeon Intersection in Sasang-gu and is subject to the same environmental influences as Hakjang-dong and Gamjeon-dong, which were surveyed in 2022.

This survey will target approximately 100 adult residents aged 19 and older living in Eomgung-dong, Sasang-gu, Busan, and is scheduled to take place on the 12th.

The assessment will begin with a questionnaire to gather information on residents' general characteristics, lifestyle habits, and environmental pollution exposure. This will be followed by clinical examinations and physical measurements. In addition, blood and urine tests will be conducted for general chemical analysis and biological exposure assessments (including tests for harmful heavy metal concentrations in the body and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons).

Currently, the Dong-A University Environmental Health Center is collaborating with the Busan Institute of Health and Environment to conduct quarterly air pollution monitoring in Eomgung-dong, Sasang-gu, Busan. The results will be provided alongside the resident survey findings.

The Environmental Health Center is dedicated to improving the health and welfare of Busan citizens by conducting research and surveys related to environmental health in the Busan area, establishing proactive monitoring and communication systems for environmentally induced diseases, and providing preventive education.
