At 10:20 a.m. on the 8th, as Oh Sangwook and Park Sangwon entered through the North Gate 1 of Daejeon City Hall, the crowd erupted in applause and cheers.
After securing Korea's first gold medal at the Paris Olympics and then winning a second gold in the team event with his golden thrust, Oh Sangwook was warmly welcomed by his home team at Daejeon City Hall.
Oh, Park, coach Kim Taeyoung, and others received bouquets from a staff representative and expressed their gratitude to the citizens of Daejeon for their enthusiastic support.
A fourth-grade student from Hanbat Elementary, who came to get Oh Sangwook's autograph, said she was proud that Oh Sangwook and Park Sangwon are sons of Daejeon.
Oh Sangwook and Park Sangwon then had a friendly conversation with Daejeon Mayor Lee Jangwoo about winning the gold medal and other stories.
Oh Sangwook was born in Daejeon, graduated from Maebong Elementary, Maebong Middle, Songchon High, and majored in Sports Science at Daejeon University, making him a true "Daejeon man." He returned in glory to Daejeon City Hall's sabre team in 2022 after starting his professional career at Seongnam City Hall in 2019.
Although he went through a slump after the Tokyo Olympics, through steady rehabilitation he won first place in the men's individual event at the 2023 Seoul International Grand Prix and delivered Korea's first gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics individual event.
Park Sangwon, who also contributed to the team gold medal, was born in Daejeon, attended Maebong Middle and Songchon High, graduated from Korea National Sport University, and joined Daejeon City Hall in 2023.
