Chungnam Fisheries Resources Research Institute Develops New Gim Variety 'Chungsuyeon No.1'

The Chungnam Fisheries Resources Research Institute has successfully developed a new variety of gim called "Chungsuyeon No. 1."

According to the province on the 7th, after more than six years of research, the institute finally passed the cultivation review by the National Institute of Fisheries Science's Aquatic Plant Variety Management Center last April and obtained variety protection rights for Chungsuyeon No. 1.

With the acquisition of variety protection rights, all rights to production and sales are protected for the next 20 years in accordance with the Seed Industry Act.

Chungsuyeon No. 1 was developed by artificially cultivating the blades of gim with superior color and growth among the striped gim farmed in Seocheon, under controlled indoor conditions. As the cultivation period progresses, its blades become shorter but grow wider, which is a distinctive feature.

The institute plans to hold a briefing session on Chungsuyeon No. 1 and collaborate with fishers to attempt large-scale field application.

Lim Dongkyu, head of research and development, said, "Due to changes in the marine environment caused by climate change, the production and quality of gim have been declining recently. We will develop excellent new varieties suitable for the sea of Chungnam to ensure stable production of gim and to vitalize the related industry."
