John Schulman, co-founder of OpenAI, the developer of the generative artificial intelligence (AI) ChatGPT, has reportedly moved to competitor Anthropic, according to local foreign media on the 5th (local time).
On the evening of the same day, Schulman announced his resignation from OpenAI through X (formerly Twitter) and said he plans to focus on AI safety issues at Anthropic. Anthropic is an AI startup founded in 2021, primarily by former OpenAI members.
Schulman explained, "I made this choice out of a desire to focus more deeply on AI alignment research and return to hands-on technical work to open a new chapter in my career." He added, "I am not leaving because of a lack of support for AI alignment research at OpenAI. On the contrary, the company's leaders were very enthusiastic about investing in this field."
AI alignment, a subfield of AI safety, studies how to adjust AI systems to align with human-intended goals, values, and ethical principles, ensuring they remain beneficial and safe for people.
On the same day, Greg Brockman, co-founder and chairman of OpenAI, took a long-term leave until the end of the year. Brockman posted on X, "This is the first time I have taken a break since co-founding OpenAI nine years ago," adding, "The mission is not over yet. We must build safe AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)."
Chairman Brockman was a key collaborator who sided with CEO Sam Altman during the board's removal of Altman in November last year. With Brockman's long-term leave and Schulman's departure, only two of the original OpenAI co-founders from 2015 remain: CEO Sam Altman and Wojciech Zaremba. OpenAI has recently undergone significant personnel changes, with many key staff resigning or being reassigned.
