An employee of a security company who stole over 420 million won in cash from bank ATMs was arrested by the police.
On the 5th, the Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul announced that they had arrested a man in his 40s, identified as Mr. A, on the 3rd on charges of nighttime trespassing and theft.
Mr. A is accused of stealing approximately 420 million won in cash stored in ATMs at six banks located in Yeongdeungpo-gu between midnight and 3 a.m. on the 23rd of last month.
The ATMs of these banks were under the security management of the company to which Mr. A belonged. Initially, it was reported that Mr. A had stolen 100 million won, but police investigations confirmed the total amount to be about 420 million won.
Immediately after the crime, Mr. A changed taxis and fled to provinces such as Wonju in Gangwon-do. It was found that he used part of the money to repay debts and for entertainment expenses, and buried 340 million won in cash in a mountain area. The cash found at the site was recovered.
The police tracked his escape route through CCTV analysis and arrested Mr. A on the 1st of this month when he came to retrieve the buried cash. During the police investigation, Mr. A stated that he committed the crime to repay personal debts and for other reasons.
