Carter Turning 100: "I Want to Live Until November to Vote for Harris"

Georgia Allows Voting Starting October 15

Jimmy Carter (99), the oldest living former U.S. president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is reportedly hoping to be able to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming November presidential election. He is currently receiving hospice care after discontinuing life-sustaining treatment.

On the 4th, Yonhap News cited U.S. CNN and AFP reports that Carter's grandson, Jason Carter, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) this week that his grandfather is "trying to vote for Kamala Harris."

Former President Carter resides in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, where, according to Georgia's early voting rules, he can cast his presidential vote starting October 15.

Carter will celebrate his 100th birthday this October, and his grandson Jason Carter recently revealed in an interview with a local media outlet that "my grandfather recently told my great-uncle (Chip Carter) that he hopes to live just long enough to cast a vote for Harris."

Earlier, in May, Jason Carter stated that "my grandfather's final days are approaching."

In 2015, Carter was diagnosed with melanoma, a type of skin cancer, which had metastasized to his liver and brain. Since February last year, after ending life-sustaining treatment, he has been receiving hospice care at his home in Plains, southern Georgia.

Hospice care typically begins when medical professionals determine that a patient has "less than six months to live," but Carter has survived for 18 months, which is highly unusual.

Meanwhile, in the U.S., support for Carter living beyond 100 years is growing, and events to celebrate his 100th birthday are being planned. While centennial birthday celebrations have been held for deceased presidents such as Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, no event has ever been held for a living former president's 100th birthday. The Jimmy Carter Library and Museum in Atlanta plans to hold a film festival this year on his birthday to honor Carter, who has long shown a passion for movies.
