‘A District Mayor Bowing Over 90 Degrees to Residents’?
Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin District, has attracted attention for bowing over 90 degrees while presenting plaques of appreciation to exemplary residents.
On the occasion of the 2nd anniversary of the 8th elected term, Mayor Kim personally visited four residents who have quietly served and devoted themselves to the local community on the 23rd of last month, expressing gratitude and awarding plaques of appreciation.
First, he presented a plaque of appreciation to Seo Jeong-sook, who runs ‘Hyeri Yeosu Dolsan Gat Kimchi’ in Guui 3-dong. Since March last year, Seo has been operating ‘Thousand-Won Breakfast’ for underprivileged university students in Gwangjin District for the first time. The profits have been donated to organizations for the disabled, showing her exceptional love for neighbors and the community.
Jang Chun-jo, who runs ‘Somunnan Dumplings’ at Jayang Traditional Market, has donated rice worth 5 million won annually since 2014, totaling 23,840 kg to date. The donated rice has been a great help to neighbors in need.
Brother and sister Yoon Woo-yeol and Yoon Nam-hee, who operate ‘Brother Hanjeongsik’ in Gunja-dong, provide free lunchboxes monthly to children in difficult circumstances and delivered 100 lunchboxes to senior centers during holidays.
Cha Ok-boon from Junggok 4-dong saved the life of an elderly person living alone. As the head of the 12th community unit, Cha discovered an elderly person collapsed and groaning inside their home during a neighborhood patrol. She immediately contacted the 119 rescue team and provided first aid. Thanks to Cha’s prompt response, a tragic incident was averted.
Mayor Kim Kyung-ho of Gwangjin District said, “I express deep gratitude and respect for the warm hearts and dedication shown by the hidden heroes of our neighborhood,” adding, “We will continue to actively find exemplary residents in the community and foster a warm community culture where neighbors live together.”
Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin District, cleaning the toilet bowl at the home of a vulnerable elderly person
Mayor Kim’s efforts continue. On October 11 last year, he personally visited the homes of elderly residents in vulnerable single-person households, helping with cleaning and organizing and checking on their health.
This visit was arranged to mark 100 days since the launch of the 8th elected term, aiming for Mayor Kim to directly communicate with residents on-site and set the direction of district administration.
“Oh my, how did you come all the way to such a narrow and tucked-away place?” The 92-year-old elderly resident living alone warmly welcomed Mayor Kim, holding his hand tightly.
“Elderly resident, has your rib injury improved? How do you manage your side dishes? The bathroom must be very inconvenient!” The elderly resident visited had a rib fracture last year, making mobility difficult. Mayor Kim asked about various concerns, checking on daily life and health.
Together with a visiting nurse, Mayor Kim checked blood pressure, diabetes levels, and medication adherence. He carefully inquired whether the resident had received support such as accompaniment to hospital through the Care SOS program, special meals on Senior Citizens’ Day, and home repair assistance for vulnerable groups, ensuring there were no inconveniences and identifying any additional needed services.
The visit to vulnerable groups continued to another elderly resident under chronic disease monitoring. The 76-year-old resident had difficulty cleaning due to limited mobility, so Mayor Kim did not hesitate to roll up his pants and clean the bathroom.
After the bathroom sparkled, the resident’s expression brightened. Mayor Kim asked whether monthly cleaning and organizing support through Total Home Care, meal support via Care SOS, and temporary home care services were practically helpful, discussing inconveniences caused by chronic illness and other areas where further assistance could be provided.
Alongside this, Mayor Kim urged the accompanying visiting nurse, welfare planner, and home care service staff to conduct thorough monitoring and care to ensure continuous and detailed support for the elderly.
Mayor Kim said, “It was truly meaningful to hear directly from the elderly about their inconveniences and areas for improvement on-site today,” adding, “We will actively reflect on what was shared to serve the elderly well and spare no support in discovering welfare blind spots and promoting projects for socially vulnerable groups.”
Mayor Kim’s actions are drawing attention as genuine efforts to serve the residents.
