Public-Private Partnership Success... Sidewalk Width Near Seokchonhosu Intersection Expanded from Minimum 2.2m to Maximum 6.5m
Establishing the Foundation for 'Songpadaero Premium Street Project' with Comfortable Walking Infrastructure
Songpa-gu (District Mayor Seo Gang-seok) announced that it completed the sidewalk expansion construction near Lotte Hotel World (around the Loti sculpture) at the Seokchon Lake intersection last July, improving the pedestrian environment in the Jamsil area.
This location is the starting point of the 'Songpa-daero Premium Street Development Project,' which the district is diligently promoting, but the pedestrian path was narrow and unsuitable for the 10-lane road. Due to a road expansion project over a decade ago, the previously wide sidewalk was reduced by the width of one lane, causing significant inconvenience for pedestrians.
To resolve the inconvenience for residents, the district coordinated with Lotte, the nearby landowner. After several site inspections and continuous consultations through work meetings, both parties agreed to remove part of the flowerbed along the street and convert it into a sidewalk.
Accordingly, from June 17, a month-long project was carried out to reduce the flowerbed and install the sidewalk.
As a result, the narrowest section, which was 2.2 meters wide, was expanded to 3.3 meters, and the originally 3.3-meter-wide area was widened to 6.5 meters, roughly doubling the sidewalk space. In fact, a local resident passing through the expanded sidewalk praised, "The path used to be so narrow that it was uncomfortable for two people to walk side by side, but now the intersection feels much more open," adding, "I no longer worry about bumping into oncoming pedestrians, so walking is much more comfortable."
The district plans to lay the foundation for a 'garden city where people want to walk' by improving pedestrian infrastructure ahead of the full-scale results of the 'Songpa-daero Premium Street Development Project,' including the Media Forest to be installed along Seokchon Lake during next year's cherry blossom season.
Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, stated, "This sidewalk expansion project is the fruit of public and private sectors working together with the shared goal of realizing public interest," and added, "We will continue to listen to residents' voices, promptly address daily inconveniences, and do our best to create a comfortable Songpa-daero for walking."
