On the 31st (local time), local media reported that on the 27th of last month, a woman was found chained to a tree in the jungle of Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra state, India. At that time, a passing shepherd heard the woman’s painful groans and immediately reported it to the police, who arrived at the scene and safely rescued her.

The police used bolt cutters to remove the shackles from the woman’s legs. Although her hands were not tied, she showed severe dehydration and was physically weak. The police urgently transported her to a nearby medical center for treatment.

According to the police investigation, the woman was identified as Lalita Kai Kumar (50), a U.S. citizen. She had moved to India over ten years ago to learn yoga and meditation and married a man from Tamil Nadu in southern India. It was confirmed that she had been staying in Goa, about 30 km from where she was found, for the past few months.

Her visa is currently expired. Immediately after being rescued, Kumar handed the police a note stating, “I need an injection for severe psychiatric treatment that causes my jaw to be unable to open and prevents me from drinking any water. Please provide nutrients through an intravenous drip.”

Kumar claimed, “My husband did not give me food for 40 days,” and “He tied me to a tree and verbally abused me, saying ‘Die.’” The police announced that they have started an investigation into Kumar’s ex-husband on charges of attempted murder. Kumar is currently showing psychiatric symptoms and has been transferred to Goa Medical College Hospital for treatment.
