Handonghun "Can You Commit an Act That Gets Impeached in One Day?"
Chukyungho "Democratic Party's Habitual Impeachment Addiction Is Very Serious"
The leadership of the People Power Party criticized the Democratic Party of Korea for pushing to impeach Broadcasting and Communications Commission Chairperson Lee Jin-sook just one day after her inauguration, calling it a "groundless impeachment" and "state terrorism."
On the 1st, at the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly, Han Dong-hoon, leader of the People Power Party, said, "The Democratic Party has trivialized the constitutionally significant institution of impeachment as a political gimmick. The people will judge this behavior." He added, "Is it possible for someone to commit such a wrongdoing that warrants impeachment in just one day? I hope the public considers this point. Isn't it already decided to impeach Chairperson Lee, not because of any crime?"
Choo Kyung-ho, floor leader of the People Power Party, also commented at the meeting on the same day regarding the impeachment push against Chairperson Lee, saying, "The Democratic Party's habitual impeachment addiction is so severe that they cannot stop even for a single day." He continued, "Impeaching three Broadcasting and Communications Commission chairpersons within a year, and even attempting to impeach the newly appointed chairperson on her very first day at work, is an act of violence and terrorism against state affairs."
Choo emphasized, "The Constitutional Court set the standard for impeachment during the impeachment trial of former President Roh Moo-hyun, stating that there must be a serious legal violation justifying the dismissal of a public official." He added, "Regardless of whether there is a serious legal violation, the Democratic Party is recklessly proposing impeachment motions with the mindset of 'let's just propose it and see what happens,' indiscriminately abusing impeachment." He urged, "I hope the Democratic Party cures its impeachment addiction before it is too late and returns to being a cooperative party that upholds the constitution and protects the people's livelihood."
The Democratic Party has maintained the position that it is illegal for Chairperson Lee and Vice Chairperson Kim Tae-gyu, who were appointed together, to approve the appointment of public broadcasting directors as a 'two-person system,' and has warned that they will impeach if the approval proceeds. After her appointment the previous day, Chairperson Lee convened a full meeting and approved the recommendation of seven pro-government directors for KBS, as well as the appointment of six pro-government directors and one auditor for the major shareholder Broadcasting Culture Promotion Foundation of MBC. On her way to work that day, Chairperson Lee responded to reporters about the Democratic Party's impeachment push by saying, "Let's wait and see over time."
