"Yang Jae-woong, Ignored at First but Late Media Play Sparks Family Backlash"

"Knowing the Phone Number but Not Apologizing, Only Communicating Through a Lawyer"

"Yang Jae-woong, Ignored at First but Late Media Play Sparks Family Backlash"

Relatives of a patient who died at a hospital run by psychiatrist Yang Jae-woong (42) expressed anger, accusing Yang of "engaging in belated media play" over his apology.

On the 30th, Hankyoreh reported an interview with the mother of the deceased patient, Park (33). In the interview, Park's mother said, "Even though they knew the family's phone number, they never apologized or came forward, instead communicating through lawyers. Now that this case has been reported in the media, they are belatedly engaging in media play." She added, "When I was protesting in front of the hospital yesterday morning, the people passed by without even a glance. This is not a sincere apology at all, so I cannot accept it," expressing her feelings.

Earlier, the Wonmi Police Station in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, announced on May 27 at 3 a.m. that a woman in her 30s, Park, had died at the hospital operated by Yang. Park had been hospitalized for treatment of addiction to diet pills containing narcotic substances.

CCTV footage clearly showed a nursing assistant and a caregiver entering and forcibly restraining Park's hands, feet, and chest to the bed. Park died after two hours of being tied up, with a swollen abdomen and a nosebleed.

The National Forensic Service issued an opinion based on an autopsy, estimating that the cause of death was pseudo-intestinal obstruction and other factors.

After the incident became known, Yang issued a statement through his agency on the 29th, saying, "Regarding the incident that occurred during the hospital process, I and all medical staff cannot hide our deep sorrow, and we sincerely apologize to the bereaved family who have lost their loved one and are in grief."

He continued, "Our hospital is fully cooperating with external agencies in the ongoing investigation by providing medical charts and CCTV footage that capture the situation at the time," and requested, "Since the investigation is still underway, please refrain from speculative posts and sensational reporting about the treatment process." He also promised, "Not only myself as the hospital director but all medical staff will cooperate sincerely with the forthcoming investigation and take full responsibility according to medical and legal judgments."
