34 Ground-Level Pedestrian Traffic Lights and 10 Voice Guidance Assist Devices Installed at 7 Locations in the First Half of This Year
Guro-gu (District Mayor Moon Heon-il) has expanded the installation of auxiliary traffic signal devices at crosswalks, such as floor-type pedestrian traffic lights and voice guidance for pedestrian signals, to prevent traffic accidents and enhance pedestrian safety.
The "floor-type pedestrian traffic light" is a device that illuminates the pedestrian signal on the ground at the crosswalk waiting line, providing additional signal information to pedestrians. It not only helps prevent accidents caused by pedestrians failing to check the pedestrian signal ahead but also allows drivers to recognize the location of the crosswalk through ground lights during nighttime or rainy weather, thereby preventing traffic accidents.
The "voice guidance auxiliary device for pedestrian signals" provides voice instructions during the green signal to help pedestrians cross the crosswalk safely.
Since January this year, the district has been promoting the installation of floor-type pedestrian traffic lights and voice guidance auxiliary devices at about 20 locations, including Gocheok Elementary School and Sindorim Station.
So far, 34 floor-type pedestrian traffic lights and 10 voice guidance auxiliary devices have been installed at 7 locations, and the district plans to complete all installations by December.
The installation sites were selected mainly in child protection zones and school routes, considering the volume of vulnerable pedestrian traffic and accident risk.
Among these, four locations including ▲ Guro 4-dong Post Office ▲ Oryu-dong Church ▲ Icheon Guk Kindergarten (child protection zone) were proposed by the Safety Traffic Division and the Oryu 1-dong Residents’ Autonomy Committee as part of the resident participation budget project.
From 2020 to 2023, the district has installed and operated 137 floor-type pedestrian traffic lights at 40 locations and 41 voice guidance auxiliary devices at 16 locations over the past four years, and plans to continue expanding these installations in the future.
A Guro-gu official stated, “We will strive to create a pedestrian environment where traffic accidents are prevented and residents can travel safely.”
