Taiwan has approved the application by the U.S. semiconductor company AMD to establish a research and development (R&D) center in Taiwan.
According to Taiwan News on the 29th, Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs announced that AMD will build an R&D center in Taiwan with a total investment of 8.64 billion New Taiwan dollars (approximately 360 billion KRW), and 50% of the workforce will be foreign talent. The Ministry also added that the Taiwanese government will provide subsidies amounting to more than 30% of the investment, totaling 3.31 billion New Taiwan dollars.
Chu Chu-Hui, Director of the Ministry's Department of Technology, stated on social media that 33 Taiwanese companies will have the opportunity to participate in AMD-led research programs focused on artificial intelligence (AI) software and graphics processing unit (GPU) development.
He further emphasized, "The investment value of the center will be raised to 15 billion New Taiwan dollars (approximately 630 billion KRW), and through a three-year program, more than 1,000 AI experts will be trained annually in Taiwan."
Meanwhile, NVIDIA, a global leader in AI chips and a U.S. semiconductor company, is also building an R&D center in Taiwan. Both NVIDIA's CEO Jensen Huang and AMD's CEO Lisa Su are originally from Taiwan.
