A man in his 60s who caused a fatal hit-and-run accident and claimed, "I thought it was a goral," has been arrested.
On the 29th, Yonhap News reported, "The Asan Police Station in Chungnam arrested a man in his 60s, identified as A, on charges of causing a fatal hit-and-run accident against a foreigner (hit-and-run causing death under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes)."
A is accused of hitting and fleeing from B (53), an Uzbek national, on a road in Dogo-myeon, Asan City, at 5 a.m. on the 27th, resulting in B's death. B was transported to the hospital in cardiac arrest by police who responded to a report from another driver at 5:37 a.m. that "a person was lying by the roadside," but ultimately died.
Police secured the broken right side mirror and vehicle fragments at the accident scene, judged it to be a hit-and-run, and began tracking vehicles moving toward downtown Asan with damaged right bumpers. At noon that day, they arrested A.
According to the police investigation, A was driving on this two-lane road toward downtown Asan when he hit B, who was walking on the shoulder in the same direction. Initially, he stated, "I thought it was a goral," but later admitted to the crime after the police investigation began.
While awaiting the results of B's autopsy, the police are investigating the detailed circumstances of the accident with A.
Meanwhile, as this case became known, the "wild boar misidentification shooting incident" that occurred on the 8th has also been brought back into the spotlight. On the 9th, Yonhap News reported that C, while engaged in pest control activities in Hoengseong, Gangwon Province, mistakenly shot a fellow hunter, thinking he was a wild boar. The police are investigating C on charges of professional negligence causing injury.
