Due to the prolonged refusal of waste collection by environmental public workers,
civil servants give up holidays and step in actively
Public officials of Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam are giving up their holidays and stepping up to collect recyclables in order to alleviate citizens' inconvenience.
Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam is working hard to minimize inconvenience for citizens as the holiday collection of recyclables in Uichang-gu and Seongsan-gu has been suspended due to industrial action by environmental public workers affiliated with the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) and the Korean Public Service and Transport Workers' Union.
As the industrial action by environmental public workers has entered its third week and become prolonged, the accumulation of recyclables in commercial areas has become severe, and some detached housing areas are also facing difficulties. Despite the hot weather, public officials are collecting recyclables in commercial areas and providing on-site guidance and reminders to citizens on proper separation and disposal of recyclables.
An official from Changwon City said, "Due to the industrial action by environmental public workers, the collection of recyclables is not being carried out smoothly, causing inconvenience to citizens. As a result, public officials have voluntarily given up their holidays to participate in the collection work."
Choi Youngsook, Director of the Climate and Environment Bureau, said, "We plan to provide as much support as possible for collection work while the industrial action continues," and urged, "We ask union members participating in the industrial action to return to work so that citizens are not inconvenienced."
