Former President Barack Obama and his wife officially announced their support for Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate for the U.S. presidential election.
On the 26th (local time), major foreign media reported that Harris's campaign released a short video showing former President Obama and Michelle Obama making a phone call to express their support.
According to the video, former President Obama said during the call, "Michelle and I wanted to call to say we will do everything we can to help you win the election and become president," adding, "We are proud to support you." Michelle Obama also said, "We are proud of you," and "This will be a historic moment."
Vice President Harris expressed gratitude for the Obamas' support and responded that she looks forward to the journey with them during the remaining three months until the election. The call reportedly took place on the 24th when Harris visited Indianapolis, Indiana, to attend an event hosted by a Black female college student club.
The Obamas also issued a statement that day saying, "We will do everything we can to make sure Harris becomes the next president of the United States," and "We hope you will join us."
Former President Obama remains a powerful figure within the Democratic Party. However, unlike other Democratic figures who immediately publicly supported Vice President Harris following President Joe Biden's announcement of his resignation, Obama delayed his endorsement, sparking much speculation. His public support on this day dispelled some of those concerns.
Vice President Harris already enjoys broad support within the Democratic Party. On the day of Biden's resignation announcement, he expressed his support for Harris, and prominent Democratic figures such as former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, former President Bill Clinton, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also declared their support. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries joined the ranks of Harris supporters as well.
Furthermore, Vice President Harris has secured the support of a majority of delegates ahead of the party convention starting on the 19th of next month, and she is expected to be officially nominated as the candidate through the delegates' online voting beginning on the 1st of next month.
