Busan Office of Education to Enhance Korean Language Skills for Multicultural and North Korean Defector Students

Customized Korean Language Class and TOPIK Class

The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Ha Yoonsoo) will operate the "2024 Korean Language (KSL) Curriculum Vacation Special Lecture" for about 30 multicultural and North Korean defector middle and high school students at the Busan Multicultural Education Support Center from the 29th to the 14th of next month.

This special lecture, being held for the first time this year, aims to enhance the academic Korean language proficiency and further education and employment capabilities of multicultural and North Korean defector students who face difficulties understanding Korean during classes.

The Busan Office of Education will run the special lecture as two separate classes: the "Academic Korean Class" for middle and high school students, and the "TOPIK Class" for high school students. Each class will consist of 2 to 5 students, taking into account their proficiency levels, and will be conducted as customized lessons.

The "Academic Korean Class" will offer 30 sessions of academic Korean language education and 9 sessions of standard Korean pronunciation training. The "TOPIK Class" will provide 30 sessions of Level 1 preparation and 9 sessions of standard Korean pronunciation training, respectively.

The "Voice Training" class, which focuses on mastering standard Korean pronunciation and correcting intonation, is expected to strengthen multicultural and North Korean defector students' adaptability to public education by improving their presentation and discussion skills.

Ha Yoonsoo, Superintendent of the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education, stated, "This special lecture will greatly help in closing the academic gap by improving multicultural and North Korean defector students' academic Korean language proficiency," and added, "The Office of Education will spare no effort in supporting these students' further education and employment capabilities, and communication skills, to help them settle in Korean society."
