Gyeonggi Provincial Medical Center's Icheon Hospital and Paju Hospital have been selected as government-designated health screening institutions for people with disabilities. As a result, the number of health screening institutions for people with disabilities in the province has increased to four, including Gyeonggi Provincial Medical Center Suwon Hospital in 2018 and Seongnam City Medical Center in 2023.
People with disabilities face relatively lower accessibility to medical institutions compared to non-disabled individuals and have difficulties with early treatment and preventive health management, necessitating the separate operation of health screening institutions for people with disabilities.
This is in accordance with the "Act on the Health Rights and Medical Accessibility Guarantee for Persons with Disabilities," which requires facilities and equipment that enable people with disabilities to conveniently receive health screenings. When making reservations or registering on-site, services such as accompaniment, provision of informational materials, and visual and auditory guidance systems are provided.
Any registered person with a disability in the province can use these health screening institutions by applying through a phone reservation at the designated hospitals.
However, currently, only Gyeonggi Provincial Medical Center Suwon Hospital is available for use as a health screening institution for people with disabilities. The other three are preparing facilities and equipment that meet the standards. Seongnam City Medical Center is scheduled to open in the second half of this year, while the newly selected Gyeonggi Provincial Medical Center Icheon Hospital and Paju Hospital are expected to open next year.
Yu Young-cheol, Director of the Gyeonggi Provincial Health and Wellness Bureau, stated, "We will not only increase the health screening rate for people with disabilities but also for all Gyeonggi residents to detect diseases early and improve the health rights of Gyeonggi residents."
