Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad held a summit in Moscow, Russia, the Kremlin announced on the 25th (local time).

According to major foreign media and Yonhap News, the two leaders met at the Moscow Kremlin the previous evening to discuss the escalating tensions in the Middle East.

President Putin said, "We are witnessing rising tensions in the Middle East, which are directly related to Syria as well."

President al-Assad, through a Russian interpreter, said, "Considering all the events happening today around the world and in Eurasia, our meeting is very important to discuss all the details and possible prospects and scenarios."

Currently, conflicts between Israel and pro-Iran armed groups are intensifying in the Middle East. Major foreign media reported that last week a Syrian businessman suspected of supporting the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah was killed in an Israeli drone strike.

Russia previously intervened in the Syrian civil war in 2015 and supported the al-Assad government by expelling Islamic extremist armed groups that had controlled Syria and parts of Iraq. The al-Assad government overcame Western-backed rebel forces and gained the upper hand.
