Secured 1.43 Billion KRW in Funding through Last Year's Ministry of Science and ICT Contest
Expanding to 25 'Smart Gyeongrodang' Locations in the Region by November This Year
Supporting Digital Gap Reduction with Senior Health Management, Online Leisure Welfare Programs, and Kiosk Experience
Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) has expanded the ‘Smart Senior Centers’ to promote elderly health management and bridge the digital divide.
Last year, the district became the first autonomous district in Seoul to establish and operate 10 Smart Senior Centers.
The Smart Senior Centers offer unique enjoyment and experiences different from traditional senior centers through ▲a ‘Smart Healthcare System’ that uses Internet of Things (IoT) health measurement devices for personalized health management ▲‘Online Leisure Welfare Programs’ utilizing video platforms ▲and ‘Experience Kiosks’ to bridge the digital divide. Among these, the ‘Online Leisure Welfare Programs’ are the most popular and have the highest participation rates among seniors.
This year, Gwanak-gu plans to expand the Smart Senior Centers to 25 locations by November.
Last year, the district was selected in the ‘2024 Smart Village Distribution and Expansion Project’ competition hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT, securing a total project budget of 1.43 billion KRW (1 billion KRW from the national government and 430 million KRW from the district).
Accordingly, the district completed on-site surveys at each senior center in early July and plans to proceed with the project considering the conditions of the centers and the requests of the elderly.
In particular, the expansion project will newly introduce the ‘Smart Table’ system, which helps improve cognitive abilities and prevent dementia through various games.
Additionally, reflecting the results of a satisfaction survey conducted earlier this year among seniors using the Smart Senior Centers, the district has diversified its educational programs.
In addition to existing singing classes and exercise lessons, programs such as ▲dementia prevention ▲line dance ▲digital education will be offered to promote not only enjoyable leisure activities but also improved digital communication skills among seniors.
The Gwanak-gu Dementia Safety Center also supports seniors’ cognitive improvement and digital competency enhancement through various experiential activities such as talking with educational robots and solving quizzes.
Mayor Park Jun-hee stated, “Through the Smart Senior Centers, we will create a more convenient, vibrant, and happy resting place for the elderly,” and added, “We will continue to strengthen welfare services for seniors through digital technology and provide various services that help bridge the digital divide for the elderly.”
