Jeong Gi-myeong, the mayor of Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do, visited the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety on the 23rd to proactively secure national budget funds amid the government's ongoing fiscal austerity policy.
According to the city, on that day, Mayor Jeong met with Jo Yong-beom, Social Budget Review Officer; Kang Yoon-jin, Economic Budget Review Officer; Oh Sang-woo, Welfare and Safety Budget Review Officer; and Jeong Deok-young, Administrative and Defense Budget Review Officer at the Ministry of Economy and Finance to deliver materials on local issues and explain the feasibility of the projects.

The main proposed projects include ▲ hosting the 2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo as an international event ▲ construction of the access road to Gyeongdo Marine Tourism Complex ▲ introduction of a large-capacity artillery system in the Honam region ▲ construction of the Hwatae~Baekya road in Yeosu ▲ installation of sewage treatment facilities in Jangchon and Jukchon villages, Samsan-myeon ▲ Gwangyang (IV) industrial water supply project ▲ and establishment of a digital-based resource circulation pilot complex.
In particular, emphasizing the urgency as the Islands Expo approaches, the city requested 5.54 billion KRW in national funds and urged for full reflection of the budget to ensure timely project implementation.
Additionally, the 'Hwatae~Baekya Road Construction Project' and the 'Access Road Construction to Gyeongdo Marine Tourism Complex' are large-scale SOC projects closely related to the Islands Expo, and it was conveyed that budget support is essential for early or on-time opening in line with the event schedule.
Subsequently, Mayor Jeong visited the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and met sequentially with Han Soon-gi, Director of Local Finance and Economy, and Jin Seon-joo, Head of the Local Allocation Tax Division, emphasizing the difficult reality of local finances due to decreases in local allocation tax and own-source revenues, and stressed the need for national-level support for the successful hosting of the Islands Expo.
The proposed special allocation tax projects include ▲ expansion and environmental maintenance of the access road to the main venue of the Islands Expo ▲ installation of smart lighting around the main and sub-venues of the Islands Expo ▲ and development of themed tourism resources at the Gaedo sub-venue.
Among these, it was stressed that the access road to Dolsan Jinmo District, the main venue of the Islands Expo, is narrow and that this project is essential for the event's progress.
Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong of Yeosu City said, “Next year is the golden time as the detailed execution plan for the Islands Expo will be actively promoted,” adding, “We will continuously visit central government ministries to fully convey our city’s determination and justification for the projects and concentrate all efforts on securing national funds.”
