Naju City in Jeollanam-do is recruiting 30 participants for the ‘Baekho Poetry Society’ (白湖詩會) at the Baekho Literature Museum until the 3rd of next month.
According to the city on the 23rd, the Baekho Poetry Society was established as a place to reinterpret classical Chinese poems, which are often difficult to understand, from a modern perspective.
From the 10th of next month until September 21st, every Saturday at 10 a.m., participants will visit the Baekho Literature Museum as well as Naju tourist attractions such as Moksanaea, Naju Sincheong, and Yeongmojeong to read and translate over 100 classical Chinese poems by Imje.
The poetry reading sessions will be led by Professor Kim Daehyun of Chonnam National University.
Professor Kim holds a Ph.D. in Classical Chinese Literature from Sungkyunkwan University and has published numerous anthologies of classical Chinese poetry, including ‘Honam Classical Poetry Anthology’ and ‘Geumgangsan Classical Poetry Anthology.’ He is also a disciple of Professor Im Hyeongtaek, who compiled the comprehensive ‘New Edition of Baekho’s Complete Works.’
Applications for the poetry society can be submitted via the Baekho Literature Museum website or by phone until the 3rd of next month.
Participation is free, and any adult interested in classical Chinese poetry can apply. If fewer than 10 participants register, the course will be postponed.
A city official stated, “Baekho Imje left behind over 1,000 poems and novels, but since all were written in classical Chinese, few have properly read his works. We hope many will take this great opportunity to learn Baekho’s poetry while exploring tourist attractions.”
