‘Welfare Allowance Also Given to Spouses of Deceased Veterans’... Yongsan-gu to Start Payments This Month

Ordinance Amendment on the Treatment and Support for National Veterans

‘Welfare Allowance Also Given to Spouses of Deceased Veterans’... Yongsan-gu to Start Payments This Month

To enhance the support for veterans, Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) announced on the 23rd that starting this month, welfare allowances will be provided to the spouses of deceased veterans.

The district revised the Ordinance on the Treatment and Support for National Veterans in Yongsan-gu in the first half of this year to establish the legal basis for providing welfare allowances to the spouses of veterans, and secured supplementary budget to enable payments from this month.

Unlike other national veterans, the legal status of veterans does not transfer to their survivors upon the veteran’s death, leaving related survivors without various supports. To assist elderly spouses of veterans who fall into this blind spot, the district will provide a monthly welfare allowance of 50,000 KRW.

Applications are being accepted at the local community service centers of the applicant’s residential area, and the allowance will be paid at the end of each month. Required documents include ▲ID card ▲copy of bankbook ▲national veteran certificate or confirmation of national veteran status of the deceased veteran ▲family relation certificate, etc. However, those already receiving existing veteran support allowances from the district are not eligible to apply, as duplicate payments are not allowed.

District Mayor Park Hee-young stated, “Thanks to the heroes who devoted their bodies and minds without hesitation for the country during the brightest days of their youth, we have become the owners of this land. Yongsan-gu has established the spouse welfare allowance to strengthen the respect and support for the widows of these heroes without forgetting their dedication.”

Meanwhile, starting this year, the district has increased the veteran support allowance from 50,000 KRW to 70,000 KRW and launched funeral services for national veterans, striving to improve the treatment of national veterans.
