Geumcheon-gu Operates Summer Special Board Game Program for Seniors
Conducted as Talent Donation in Collaboration with Volunteer Groups... Pilot Operation at 3 Senior Centers This Month
Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that this month, it will pilot a summer special board game program in collaboration with the volunteer group ‘Nolina Num Volunteer Group’ at three senior centers in the area.
Board games are games played by multiple people competing according to certain rules using tools such as boards, cards, and picture pieces. They are excellent for preventing dementia as they enhance concentration, reasoning ability, thinking skills, and communication skills.
The program will be conducted once a week for a total of four sessions, using four types of board games that are easy for seniors to enjoy. In each session, 2 to 3 instructors from the board game volunteer group ‘Nolina Num Volunteer Group’ (President Lee Eun-kyung) will teach through talent donation.
In the first session, participants can develop observation and quick response skills by finding matching pictures. The second session focuses on managing the differences between standard cards and special cards to cultivate strategic judgment. The third session enhances spatial perception by completing pictures using pieces, and the fourth session involves completing the board using random shapes to understand and utilize different shapes.
The district encouraged senior centers that had not previously participated in the program to join first in order to revitalize senior center operations. After the pilot program ends, a satisfaction survey will be conducted to consider expanding the project.
Mayor Yu Seong-hoon said, “I hope this program will provide an opportunity for seniors at the centers to gather and have a joyful time,” adding, “We will continue to strive to transform senior centers into more vibrant spaces.”
The district operates various senior center revitalization programs year-round at 72 centers in cooperation with several organizations including the Public Health Center, the Geumcheon-gu branch of the Korean Senior Citizens Association, the Geumcheon branch of the National Health Insurance Corporation, Geumcheon Senior Welfare Center, and Geumcheon 50 Plus Center. These programs include exercise and gymnastics, leisure activities (calligraphy, art, singing), and cognitive activities (dementia prevention).
As an extension of the senior center summer special program, education on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) use in cooperation with the Public Health Center, as well as life-saving education, will also be provided.
