Muan-gun Holds Public Hearing on Expanding Muan Mudflat Wetland Protection Area Designation

Expansion of Designation from Existing Hampyeongman Tidal Flat (42㎢) to Tando Bay (113.34㎢) Underway

Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim San) announced on the 22nd that it held a public hearing for the expansion designation of the Muan mudflat wetland protection area at the Hyeongyeong-myeon Cultural Welfare Center on the 17th.

The public hearing was held to expand the wetland protection area, which was previously limited to the Hampyeong Bay mudflat (42㎢), to include Tando Bay (113.34㎢). According to ecological surveys, Tando Bay meets the criteria for wetland protection area designation as it is home to marine protected species such as the white-toothed lugworm, as well as the yellow-billed egret, spotted redshank, black-faced gull, and others.

About 70 stakeholders attended the public hearing, including local residents from fishing villages, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Mokpo Regional Fisheries Office, the Korean Mudflat World Heritage Promotion Team, and city and county officials. After listening to the plans for expanding the wetland protection area and conservation plans, the session proceeded with a free Q&A from the residents.

Heo Jae-kyung, head of the Muan Ecological Mudflat Project Office, said, “We plan to collect the opinions submitted at this public hearing and submit them to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in July.” He added, “We will continue to promote the excellence and importance of conserving the ecologically valuable Hampyeong Bay and Tando Bay mudflats to the residents,” urging local residents for their interest and cooperation.
