Now in its third year, the event is the largest domestic global forum specializing in displays. This year, discussions will focus on the major transformation of the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) market and laying the groundwork for the micro light-emitting diode (LED) market.
This year, the proportion of overseas speakers, including global companies such as Germany's Merck and Japan's Idemitsu Kosan, has been expanded from 47% last year to 57%. For the first time, a Nobel Prize in Physics laureate has been invited. It is Professor Shuji Nakamura of the University of California, Santa Barbara campus, who won the award in 2014 for developing the blue LED.
On the first day of the forum, Professor Nakamura, Lee Chang-hee, Vice President and Head of Samsung Display Research Institute, and Yoon Soo-young, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of LG Display, will give presentations.
Vice President Lee will present new growth opportunities and challenges for the display industry brought by 'On-Device AI,' which will drive replacement demand for mobile and IT products. Vice President Yoon will discuss ways to increase market share in new sectors such as IT and mobility by leveraging OLED's unique image quality, design, and eco-friendly characteristics.
Professor Nakamura will propose business strategies regarding the current status of material technologies for microLED high efficiency, future microLED application markets, and commercialization prospects in the AI communication field.
Additionally, Taiwanese display company AUO, which supplies panels to Samsung Electronics, will share the status of its ecosystem construction.
On the second day, leading microLED chip technology companies such as Seoul Viosys from Korea and PlayNitride from Taiwan will present their technology roadmaps.
Japan's DIC, a leading pigment company for displays, and Japan's Idemitsu Kosan, a blue OLED fluorescent material company, will present their business strategies. Germany's Merck will reveal the development status of optical materials for extended reality (XR) devices.
Furthermore, from the second day, the global display industry exhibition 'K-Display 2024' will be held simultaneously at COEX Hall A for three days.
Lee Dong-wook, Vice Chairman of the Display Industry Association, said, "Now is the business golden time as OLED form factor markets such as automotive, XR, and transparent displays are blooming, and countries are intensively preparing to lead the next-generation microLED market," adding, "I hope the forum will serve as a compass for Korean companies to explore new strategies and commercialize them."
