8-Year Term, Same Treatment as IOC Members
Interest in Maintaining 3 Members Following Lee Ki-heung and Kim Jae-yeol
The fate of Park In-bi, who is challenging for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes' Commission, will be decided on August 7.
According to MyInfo, the official information site of the 2024 Paris Olympic Organizing Committee, on August 7, the announcement of the IOC Athletes' Commission election results and a press conference will be held at the Main Press Center (MPC) set up at the Palais des Congr?s in Paris, France. During the Paris Olympics, four successors to the outgoing IOC Athletes' Commission members, including Lee Seung-min, president of the Korea Table Tennis Association, will be elected by athlete votes.
Park In-bi became a candidate last August after overcoming competition from shooting athlete Jin Jong-oh (currently a member of the National Assembly) and volleyball player Kim Yeon-koung (Heungkuk Life). She also smoothly passed the IOC's screening process conducted for candidates worldwide. She delayed her departure slightly due to cold and flu symptoms. She will arrive in Paris on the 22nd and begin full-scale election campaigning. She recently announced her second pregnancy. She expressed her determination, saying, "I want to complete the campaign in good health and show the strength of being a mother of two children and a woman."
Coincidentally, August 7, the day announced for the IOC Athletes' Commission election results, is also the day the women's golf competition begins at the Paris Olympics. Park In-bi is the gold medalist from the 2016 Rio Olympics. Ko Jin-young, Yang Hee-young, and Kim Hyo-joo will challenge for medals after eight years.
If Park In-bi is elected this time, South Korea will be able to maintain three IOC members, including Lee Ki-heung, president of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, and Kim Jae-yeol, president of the International Skating Union (ISU). The IOC Athletes' Commission represents the voices of athletes as Olympians. It is a position that receives the same treatment as regular IOC members. The term is eight years.
