Even Biden's Political Allies Face Resignation Pressure
Amid growing calls within the Democratic Party for President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race due to repeated concerns about his health and cognitive abilities, even Biden's political allies are reportedly beginning to pressure him to step down one by one.
On the 17th (local time), CNN reported that former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently conveyed to President Biden during a phone call the results of a poll indicating that he would not be able to defeat former President Trump in the November election, warning that if he seeks re-election, the Democrats risk losing the House elections.
In response, President Biden reportedly rebutted by citing polls showing he could win and reiterated his intention to complete the presidential race.
Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader and the top figure in the Democratic Party, also reportedly conveyed his position urging Biden to abandon his re-election bid during a private meeting last weekend, according to ABC News on the same day.
Former Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Schumer are known as strong political pillars supporting President Biden. With even these key allies pressuring Biden to resign, the president's position emphasizing his commitment to finishing the race is weakening.
Following the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, on the 13th, Trump's chances of winning have increased, while President Biden's health controversies have resurfaced after he tested positive for COVID-19 on the same day.
In an interview with BET News on the day, President Biden stated that he might reconsider running if medical issues arise, leading to analyses suggesting a shift in his previously expressed determination to complete the presidential race.
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is reportedly pushing to officially confirm President Biden as the presidential candidate early, possibly in early next month, ahead of the party convention scheduled for four days starting on the 19th of next month. However, within the Democratic Party, there are also movements to delay the early nomination process, which could hinder efforts to confirm Biden as the candidate early.
