Gyeonggi-do Protects Vulnerable Workers' Rights... Enacts 'Working People's Rights Protection Ordinance'

Gyeonggi Province is taking steps to protect the rights of vulnerable workers who fall into the blind spots of labor laws.

Gyeonggi Province announced that starting from the 18th, it will implement the "Gyeonggi Province Working People's Rights Protection Ordinance," established to protect vulnerable workers such as platform workers and special-type workers who are not adequately protected under existing labor laws due to the diversification of employment forms brought about by the 4th Industrial Revolution.

Prior to the enactment of the ordinance, Gyeonggi Province held two expert meetings in October 2022 and May 2023, as well as a policy discussion in May 2024, to gather opinions through a consultation process.

The ordinance includes provisions on the rights of working people such as the right to work without discrimination and the right to work in a pleasant and safe environment (Article 3), the establishment of basic and implementation plans (Articles 7-8), and support for various activities for policy research and rights protection (Article 10).

Geum Cheol-wan, Director of the Labor Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "We hope to create an environment where workers can work safely without discrimination," and added, "Gyeonggi Province will continue to do its best to protect and promote workers' rights."
