As most residents who left the hospitals have not returned, each training hospital is accelerating the processing of resident resignations to finalize the scale of vacancies. In the case of the 'Big 5' hospitals, the number of residents who resigned increased by about 700 in a single day, and the resignation rate has already reached 38.1%.
According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare on the 17th, among 10,506 residents at 211 training hospitals nationwide as of the previous day, 1,302 had resigned, resulting in a resignation rate of 12.4%. This is an increase of 1,207 from 75 as of the 15th.
Among these, focusing only on the 'Big 5' hospitals (Seoul National University, Samsung Seoul, Seoul Asan, Seoul St. Mary’s, and Severance Hospitals), as of the previous day, 732 out of 1,922 affiliated residents had resigned, pushing the resignation rate up to 38.1%. Until the 15th, the number of resignations was 16, but it increased by 716 in just one day.
Training hospitals are required by the government to complete the processing of resignations for residents who have not returned by this day and to submit the confirmed vacancy numbers to the Training Environment Evaluation Committee under the direct jurisdiction of the Minister of Health and Welfare. Since the resident quotas at each hospital are limited and the vacancy scale can only be finalized after resignation processing is completed, hospitals cannot indefinitely postpone the resignation processing. The government plans to proceed with the second half resident recruitment schedule starting from the 22nd based on these vacancy numbers.
Previously, training hospitals requested residents who had not returned to respond by the 15th whether they would resign or return. However, except for a very small number, most residents did not respond, resulting in an overall attendance rate of only 8.4% for all residents, including interns and residents.
