Tesla, after mass layoffs, hires 800 in 3 months... AI and robotics focus

In April, Tesla, the American electric vehicle company that carried out large-scale layoffs, announced it will hire about 800 new employees in future technology fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and energy, Bloomberg reported on the 16th (local time).

According to the report, Tesla has been continuously posting job openings in advanced technology fields, including AI experts, on its own recruitment page over the past few weeks.

Bloomberg stated that most of the new positions Tesla is filling are focused on AI and robotics, including Tesla's humanoid robot, Optimus. At least 30 positions related to Optimus and at least 25 positions related to autonomous driving development or the driving assistance system Autopilot have been identified.

In mid-May, Tesla already placed 17 AI and robotics-related positions at its "Engineering Headquarters" in Palo Alto, California, part of Silicon Valley. According to Bloomberg, the number of employees working at this office increased to about 130 as of the 10th.

The newly hired workforce also includes positions related to the installation of large-capacity batteries called Megapacks and solar products. Analysts consider the energy storage business as one of Tesla's core long-term growth areas.

Additionally, customer-facing department staff will also be hired.

Bloomberg said, "This hiring is far from the thousands of jobs Tesla eliminated this year and reflects Elon Musk's future vision," adding, "Musk views Tesla not just as an electric vehicle company but as an AI, robotics, and sustainable energy company."

Earlier, Tesla conducted large-scale workforce reductions starting in April. Last month, the U.S. economic media CNBC reported that Tesla had cut about 19,500 employees, approximately 14% of its total workforce (140,473 as of the end of last year), by mid-last month.
