Goryeong-gun Holds Resident Briefing Session on Daegaya Ancient City Promotion

Working-Level Consultations Held for Designated Zones

Goryeong County (Governor Lee Namcheol) held a resident briefing session on the promotion of Daegaya Godo on the 16th, attended by more than 150 local residents including heads of departments and offices.

Following the briefing, a discussion was also held with relevant department staff to coordinate practical matters regarding the designation of the Daegaya Godo district.

At the Central Committee for Godo Preservation and Promotion held by the National Heritage Administration on July 3, Goryeong County was officially designated as Daegaya Godo for the first time in over 20 years since the enactment of the Godo Promotion Act. As a follow-up, the county will establish the designated Godo district and apply to the Central Committee for Godo Preservation and Promotion of the National Heritage Administration.

At this resident briefing, Jo Hongseok, Director of the Foundation for Historical and Cultural Environment Policy Research Institute, which is conducting the academic research for the mid- to long-term planning after the designation of Goryeong Daegaya Godo, explained the Godo preservation and promotion system, the main achievements of the Godo preservation and promotion projects (such as resident support projects, residential environment improvement projects, resident infrastructure improvement projects, and resident education projects), and the direction for Daegaya Godo promotion. There was also a Q&A session regarding the designation of the Godo district.

In addition, the practical meeting for the designation of the Godo district brought together staff from the Urban Division, Architecture Division, and Daegaya-eup to discuss the boundaries and criteria for special preservation and preservation promotion districts, as well as the types and scope of projects within the designated district.

The designation of the Godo district aims to enhance the dignity of the city by strengthening its identity through the planned restoration and creation of the historical framework and historical and cultural environment of the city, as well as protecting the property rights of local residents near cultural heritage sites, in response to changes in the policy environment for historical cities brought about by a paradigm shift in historical and cultural environments.

In addition, national funding can be secured for projects such as: the Godo Image Discovery Project for improving residential environments and streetscapes; the Godo Historic City Creation Project for relic maintenance and improving the historic and cultural environment; the Godo Exploration Hub Creation Project for establishing world heritage and key relic exploration centers; and the Godo Resident Activity Support Project for supporting resident participation programs and organizations.

Governor Lee Namcheol said, "For the first time since the enactment of the Godo Promotion Act, Daegaya Goryeong has been newly designated as a Godo. This resident briefing is an opportunity to explain the progress so far, discuss future directions after the designation, and gather residents' opinions before identifying various projects to be pursued following the designation. We will focus administrative efforts on establishing the identity of the brilliant historical and cultural city of Daegaya Goryeong, improving residents' living environments, enhancing cultural enjoyment rights, and creating jobs to help overcome the crisis of regional extinction."

He added, "Staff from relevant departments will gather to set the most suitable designated district for Goryeong County, and we will prepare an efficient district plan so that Godo preservation and promotion projects can be developed based on Daegaya's unique historical and cultural resources."
