Industry's First 10.7Gbps Speed... Verification with MediaTek
Maintaining No.1 Market Share at 55% in Q1
On-Device AI Device Optimization Evaluation
Samsung Electronics announced on the 16th that it has completed operation verification of the industry's fastest low-power double data rate 5X (LPDDR5X) DRAM in collaboration with MediaTek, the world's largest mobile application processor (AP) company. The company aims to solidify its technological leadership in low-power, high-performance products in the mobile DRAM market and maintain its global No. 1 position.
Samsung Electronics has completed verification of the LPDDR5X-based 16GB package product to be equipped in MediaTek's latest flagship mobile AP, the Dimensity 9400, scheduled for release in the second half of the year. The company plans to take the lead in commercializing high-performance mobile DRAM. According to market research firm Counterpoint Research, MediaTek held a 40% share of the global mobile AP market in the first quarter, ranking first. With product verification completed through collaboration with MediaTek, Samsung Electronics' mobile DRAM business is expected to gain momentum.
The verified product operates at a speed of 10.7 Gbps (gigabits per second), the fastest in the industry. Samsung Electronics completed operation verification just three months after announcing the development of this product in April. It improved operating speed and power consumption by more than 25% compared to existing products. This means it has the low-power, high-performance characteristics essential for on-device AI (device-embedded AI) products. Users can use their mobile device batteries longer and utilize high-performance on-device AI functions even without connecting to servers or the cloud.
JC Hsu, Senior Vice President of MediaTek, said, "Through close collaboration with Samsung Electronics, we successfully completed the industry's first operation verification by equipping Samsung Electronics' high-performance 10.7 Gbps LPDDR5X in Dimensity." He added, "Going forward, users will be able to maximize battery performance and utilize more AI functions through devices equipped with the latest chipsets."
Byoungchul Bae, Vice President of Product Planning at Samsung Electronics' Memory Business Division, said, "Through strategic collaboration with MediaTek, we have verified the operation of the industry's fastest LPDDR5X DRAM and proven it as a solution tailored for the AI era." He added, "Through organic cooperation with customers, we will provide solutions suitable for the upcoming on-device AI era and lead the AI smartphone market."
With this operation verification, Samsung Electronics is expected to maintain its 'super-gap' in the mobile DRAM market. According to market research firm Omdia, Samsung Electronics held a 54.8% share of the global mobile DRAM market in the first quarter, ranking first. The mobile DRAM market size is expected to grow from $12.35 billion (approximately 17.1 trillion KRW) last year to $25.31 billion (approximately 35.1 trillion KRW) by 2028. The compound annual growth rate is expected to exceed 15%.
LPDDR5 is expanding its applications not only in mobile but also in PCs, servers, and more. Especially in the server market such as data centers, there is high interest in this product for power and energy savings. The more the on-device AI market activates, the greater the demand for LPDDR5. The growth potential of the on-device AI market is high. According to market analysis firm MarketsandMarkets, the global on-device AI market is expected to grow more than ninefold from $18.5 billion (approximately 25.6 trillion KRW) in 2022 to $173.9 billion (approximately 241 trillion KRW) in 2030, with an average annual growth rate of over 37%.
A Samsung Electronics official said, "Based on active cooperation with customers, we plan to actively expand LPDDR DRAM applications not only in mobile but also in AI accelerators, servers, high-performance computing (HPC), automotive, and more."
