The Original Play "Dangyeonhan Bakkat" Depicting the Journey of a North Korean Defector Broker

Opening of Doosan Art Center Space111 on the 20th

The Changjang play "Dangyeonhan Bakkat," which depicts the dramatic journey of a North Korean defector broker, will be performed at Doosan Art Center Space111 from the 20th of this month until August 4th.

This is a new work by writer Lee Yang-gu, who won the 59th Baeksang Arts Awards Baeksang Theater Award and the 31st Daesan Literary Award last year for the play "Dangseonja Eopsum." Lee Yang-gu drew inspiration from several real incidents and wove them into a single fictional story.

Lee Yang-gu stated, "I want to portray the journey of the North Korean defector broker traveling narrow paths and the people he meets as if they are people finding their way through the labyrinth of Greek mythology."

"Dangyeonhan Bakkat" follows the dramatic journey of a North Korean defector broker, a "woman," who meets various characters on the road against the backdrop of several East Asian cities such as Hyesan, Jangbaek, Beijing, Kunming, and Luang Namtha.

The play is directed by Song Jeong-an, who also directed "Sutakdeul-ui Ssaum_COCK" and "Little Women." Director Song Jeong-an said, "Through experiences of disconnection and connection, I want to question the things that compartmentalize and border people and seek the possibilities of freedom and coexistence."

Actor Kang Ji-eun, who won the acting award at the 56th Dong-A Theater Awards in 2019, plays the role of the North Korean defector broker "woman," with actors Gong Sang-a, Kim Hyo-jin, Woo Beom-jin, and Jang Seok-hwan also appearing. Although the characters in the play are mainly from Hyesan, North Korea, they are portrayed as individuals who utilize language as a resource and cross borders and boundaries.

The play "Dangyeonhan Bakkat" is organized as a joint project by the project group Ssangsiot and Doosan Art Center.

Tickets for the play "Dangyeonhan Bakkat" can be reserved through Doosan Art Center and Interpark. Korean and English subtitles will be provided for all performances, and sign language interpretation will be available for deaf audiences on July 26-27 and August 3 performances.
