IP-Holding Production Companies Gain Momentum for Overseas Expansion

Government Announces Call for Participants in 'Series On Board'
Promoting Content Overseas and Expanding IP Business
Last Year's Drama 'Yugoeui Nal' Achieves UK Remake Success

The overseas expansion of production companies holding intellectual property rights (IP) is gaining momentum. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency are calling for participants for 'Series On Board.'

IP-Holding Production Companies Gain Momentum for Overseas Expansion

Series On Board is a showcase where domestic production companies meet overseas producers, broadcasters, and online video services (OTT) to promote content and expand IP business. Participants receive support such as investment attraction, promotional material production, interpretation, and performance publicity, and can discuss broadcasting rights sales, co-productions, and remakes.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is recruiting buyers interested in investing and collaborating in K-content by connecting with local organizations such as the Korea-American Leaders in Hollywood and the Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television in the UK. A ministry official stated, "Last year, the event was held for the first time in Paris, France; London, UK; and Los Angeles (LA), USA, achieving results such as the UK co-remake of the Ace Story drama 'Yugoeui Nal' (The Day of Abduction)."

This year, the event will be held in London from November 6 to 8, and in LA from November 11 to 13. From September 23 to 25, it will also visit Tokyo, Japan. A Korea Creative Content Agency official said, "Japan is the third-largest content market in the world," and added, "Since it is held ahead of the Tokyo International Film Market (TIFFCOM) in October, we expect local interest in K-content to increase further."

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is also expanding the support areas from dramas to documentaries, entertainment, and more. In particular, it will fully support non-drama content that can be produced in a seasonal format to encourage continuous use of IP. A ministry official explained, "We aim to create many cases like the documentary 'Rhapsody Series' by EL TV, which signed a direct broadcasting rights contract with Netflix."

The application deadline is the 26th. The ministry will select eight production companies each from the English-speaking regions (USA and UK) and Asia to promote overseas expansion. For more details, please refer to the content export marketing platform Wellcon website.
