Active Police Officer Arrested and Indicted for Leaking Information on Hwang Ui-jo Investigation

Allegations of Conveying Messages Such as "Prepare When Raids Are Conducted"

A current police officer accused of leaking investigation information regarding illegal filming charges against former national soccer player Hwang Ui-jo has been sent to trial while in custody.

According to the legal community on the 14th, the Criminal Division 1 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Kim Seung-ho) has indicted Police Sergeant Jo Mo on charges of official secret leakage. Sergeant Jo is accused of informing a lawyer about the investigation details of Hwang's case in January while working at the Cyber Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency.

The prosecution believes that the information about the search and seizure leaked by Sergeant Jo was passed through several intermediaries before reaching Hwang's side. It is reported that Hwang's side received information from a broker such as "The police will conduct a search and seizure tomorrow, so prepare," and "The police will depart shortly and arrive in an hour," regarding the timing and location of the search and seizure.

Investigations revealed that Sergeant Jo did not receive any money or valuables in exchange for the leaked investigation information.

The investigation began after Hwang's side filed a request to exclude the investigator in February, claiming that investigation information had been leaked to the police. The police arrested Sergeant Jo on the 19th of last month and transferred him to the prosecution on the 25th of the same month.

Meanwhile, the prosecution indicted Hwang without detention on the 11th on charges of illegal filming under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes, specifically for filming sexual intercourse without the consent of the other party.
