Democratic and Republican Figures Unite in Condemnation
Former U.S. President Donald Trump was injured after being shot during a campaign rally on the 13th (local time), prompting American politicians who have experienced similar attacks in the past to unanimously condemn the act regardless of political affiliation.
Gabrielle Giffords, a former Democratic congresswoman who suffered a gunshot wound to the head during a 2011 political event in her district in Arizona, issued a statement on the day of the shooting incident involving former President Trump, saying, "Political violence is horrific. I know this firsthand."
At the time of the shooting, six people, including a federal judge, were killed and another 12 were injured, shocking American society. Giffords said, "I hold in my heart former President Trump and all those harmed by today's unjustifiable act of violence."
Nancy Pelosi, former Democratic Speaker of the House whose husband was targeted in a terrorist attack in 2022, said on the day, "As someone who has family members who have been victims of political violence, I know from experience that there is no place for this kind of political violence in our society," adding, "I am thankful to God that former President Trump is safe."
Steve Scalise, a Republican congressman who was once in critical condition after being shot by a gunman opposed to Trump during a congressional baseball practice in 2017, also stated on X (formerly Twitter), "There is no place for political violence."
