In this regard, The New York Times (NYT) reported, based on multiple judicial officials, that an AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle was recovered from the body of a white male who was shot dead at the campaign rally site in Butler, Pennsylvania, where the shooting occurred. The AR-15 style rifle is known to be a civilian version modified from the military M-16 rifle.
According to NBC, an FBI agent explained, "There is no known motive for the crime yet." It was also reported that the suspect's identity is being confirmed using biometric identification.
Former President Trump was shot while campaigning in Butler, Pennsylvania, on the same day. He sustained a gunshot wound that penetrated the upper part of his right ear.
