Ceiling 'Seullingpaen' Gains Popularity with Retro Trend...Emerges as an Interior Must-Have Item

Sharing Interior Information: 20,000 Photos on Ohouse Today

Ceiling fans, which were commonly seen in middle-class living rooms during the 1980s and 1990s, are gaining popularity again. Ceiling fans, a type of large fan mounted on the ceiling, were forgotten for a while after air conditioners became essential home appliances, but recently they have attracted attention as an interior item along with the retro trend. Nowadays, they are often seen in hot Southeast Asian resorts, so installing a ceiling fan can create an exotic atmosphere in apartment living rooms.

On the 14th, lifestyle platform Ohouse announced that over 21,000 photos of ceiling fans have been shared recently. Ohouse, where actual interior cases are posted, is considered the platform that best understands industry trends. Reflecting recent popularity, there are more than 600 ceiling fans currently for sale on Ohouse. On Instagram, posts with the hashtag '#실링팬' exceed 40,000. An interior industry official explained, "Many people who are newly renovating choose ceiling fans for their living room ceilings as a basic option," adding, "because they are modern, highly functional, and have proven economic benefits."

Ceiling fans can be used all year round. When used with air conditioners in summer, they improve cooling efficiency and reduce energy consumption. In winter, the reverse rotation function circulates warm air downward to enhance heating efficiency. The industry estimates that cooling electricity costs can be reduced by 20-30%, and heating costs by 30-40% in winter. They are especially effective in homes with high ceilings.

The popularity of ceiling fans increased as the COVID-19 pandemic led to more time spent at home and heightened interest in indoor air circulation and interior design. Additionally, the retro trend further boosted demand. As their popularity grew, new products combining ceiling fans with lighting were developed. Jogyutae, Home Deco MD at Ohouse, said, "The clean-looking all-white 3-blade model is the most popular choice among customers," adding, "Recently, products combining ceiling fans and ceiling lights have become trendy."

When installing a ceiling fan, it should be chosen according to the size of the space. Generally, fans under 36 inches are recommended for spaces under 12㎡, fans between 42 and 48 inches for 12-18㎡, and fans over 52 inches for larger spaces. There are also precautions when installing. The fan blades should be at least 2.3 meters above the floor for safety. If the ceiling is low, a shorter fan is preferable. If installing a ceiling fan where lighting is already installed, additional wiring work may be required, so it is safest to seek professional help whenever possible.
