Ahn Meets Parties On Site
"Lack of Interest in Borderline Intellectual Youths"
"From Now On, Parliament and State Must Take Care"
On the 11th, Ahn Sang-hoon, a member of the People Power Party, held a talk concert with young people with borderline intelligence and their families. This is the second series of 'Wumunhyeondap (Our Problems Have Answers in the Field)' hosted by Representative Ahn.
According to the representative's office on the 13th, on the 11th, Representative Ahn visited Cheongnyeon Bapsang Mungan and Peach Market located in Jongno-gu, Seoul. Cheongnyeon Bapsang Mungan is a restaurant where young people with borderline intelligence directly cook and sell kimchi stew. Peach Market is a space that develops easy content and provides education for learners who have difficulties in learning due to borderline intelligence, developmental disabilities, and other challenges.
The talk concert that day was attended not only by experts such as Cho Yoon-kyung, Director of Employment Development at the Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled, Kim Soon-jae, Head of the Disability Employment Division at the Ministry of Employment and Labor, and Kwon So-hyun, Team Leader at the Seoul Borderline Lifelong Education Support Center, but also by young people with borderline intelligence and their families.
Young people with borderline intelligence generally refer to those with an IQ between 71 and 84. They experience difficulties in learning and social adaptation due to cognitive limitations. Additionally, they are placed in a blind spot in employment, welfare, and education between disabled and non-disabled individuals.
During the discussion, the need to expand welfare policies for people with borderline intelligence, which have been focused only on school-age children, and the necessity of an employment support system for young people with borderline intelligence were discussed.
Representative Ahn said, "It is true that social interest in young people with borderline intelligence has been lacking, but from now on, the individuals concerned, experts, and the nation including the National Assembly can join hands and move forward together. We will carefully consider all the shared content step by step and ensure that as our society develops, young people with borderline intelligence can also live in a better society."
Meanwhile, Representative Ahn is conducting the 'Wumunhyeondap' series to create and implement policies. This is the second event following a visit to the Korea Institute of Child Care and Education last month, based on the principle that the voices from the field must be heard.
