Samsung Electronics Affiliate 'Semes' to Establish Technology Development Center in Yongin

Yongin-si Announces Industrial Complex Plan Approval
20-Story Building on 94,400㎡ Site in Gomae-dong

Semes, a semiconductor equipment company affiliated with Samsung Electronics, will build a 20-story technology development center in Gomae-dong, Giheung-gu, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do.

Yongin City announced on the 13th that it has approved and announced the "Giheung Future Urban High-tech Industrial Complex Plan," which Semes is establishing on a 94,399㎡ site in Gomae-dong 764, Giheung-gu.

Accordingly, Semes plans to invest 255.6 billion KRW by 2026 to develop the Giheung Future Urban High-tech Industrial Complex by 2026. Semes will build a 20-story technology development center here. The investment cost for the technology development center has not yet been finalized.

Semes, affiliated with Samsung Electronics, is a comprehensive semiconductor equipment company that produces various related equipment essential for semiconductor processes such as cleaning, inspection, and transfer. As of last year, it recorded sales of 2.5155 trillion KRW and an operating profit of 66.7 billion KRW.

The industrial complex plan also includes a substation supplying power to areas with power shortages such as Samsung Electronics and Giheung, Hwaseong Dongtan, support facilities, and small park sites. Semes plans to create a park golf course in the adjacent Giheung Lake Park as a public contribution during the industrial complex development process.

The city received an allocation of industrial complex quota from Gyeonggi-do in September 2021 to attract semiconductor equipment companies. In November 2022, Semes submitted an industrial complex plan approval application to the city, officially launching the project.

The city expects the industrial complex development to create about 4,200 direct and indirect jobs.

Meanwhile, with SK Hynix’s Yongin Semiconductor Cluster and Samsung Electronics’ Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex development, major semiconductor companies are increasingly moving to Yongin.

Global semiconductor equipment company Lam Research, which operates a research and development (R&D) center in the Yongin Jigok Industrial Complex, plans to relocate its headquarters from Pangyo New Town to the Jigok Industrial Complex within this year. Tokyo Electron Korea, one of the world’s top four semiconductor equipment companies, plans to build a new R&D center in the Wonsam General Industrial Complex in Yongin.

Lee Sang-il, mayor of Yongin, said, "The city will actively support the smooth establishment of Semes’ technology development center," adding, "We will continue to ensure that companies wishing to settle in the city do not face inconveniences and will work harder to attract companies to expand the semiconductor ecosystem."
