The Pyeongtaek Station plaza development project has been underway since 2020, aiming to promote regional balanced development and provide cultural and leisure spaces. The city prepared a blueprint for the Pyeongtaek Station plaza through processes such as public discussions and an international design competition, and broke ground on this day after four years. Completion is scheduled for 2026.

A total of 80.8 billion KRW will be invested in creating a space where citizens can relax and enjoy culture. In particular, a parking lot with 203 spaces will be constructed beneath the plaza, and an underground pedestrian walkway connecting to the surrounding commercial areas will also be installed.

The city plans to create a 'car-free street' at the connection point of the underground pedestrian walkway beneath the plaza, where rest and cultural events can take place. Through this, the city aims to revitalize not only the plaza but also the nearby old downtown area.

About 200 citizens, Mayor Jeong Jang-seon, City Council Chairman Kang Jeong-gu, and National Assembly members Hong Gi-won and Kim Hyun-jung attended the groundbreaking ceremony. Mayor Jeong said, "Pyeongtaek Station is a space where countless citizens' memories have been accumulated over a long time," adding, "We will do our best to create a space that is more loved by citizens and a pride of Pyeongtaek."

Meanwhile, considering that the floating population around Pyeongtaek Station exceeds 30,000 people daily on average, the city plans to conduct thorough safety inspections during the construction period and introduce smart safety equipment.
