73% of French Citizens Oppose 'Left-Wing Solo Government'... 43% Support Coalition

Far-right "No confidence in far-left and Green Party ministers"

In France, where the government formation is underway following the general election, a survey revealed that about 7 out of 10 citizens oppose the formation of a left-wing single-party government. On the other hand, more than 40% responded that a coalition government should be formed.

According to a survey conducted by polling firm Odoxa on behalf of the French daily Le Figaro from the 10th to 11th (local time), 73% of the 1,005 French respondents opposed a government composed solely of left-wing figures. Instead, 43% preferred the coalition government proposed by President Emmanuel Macron.

Regarding the method of forming a coalition, the proportion of opinions within the pro-government camp was evenly split at 43% each between 'forming an alliance with the left-wing camp excluding the far-left party La France Insoumise (LFI)' and 'forming an alliance with the right-wing Republicans instead of the left.'

Among supporters of the Socialist Party and the Green Party within the left-wing coalition, 69% and 75% respectively responded that LFI should be excluded from the government formation. LFI is currently leading the government formation within the left-wing coalition. Among left-wing parties, LFI holds the largest number of seats with 74.

Meanwhile, the far-right National Rally (RN), which became the third-largest political faction in the parliament in this election, warned that it would pass a vote of no confidence if far-left parties or Green Party members are included in the newly formed government. Marine Le Pen, who was re-elected as the RN floor leader in the National Assembly, said on the evening of the 11th on X (formerly Twitter), "Macron has plunged us into a quagmire, making the future government of France uncertain. But one thing is clear: we will vote no confidence in any government that includes LFI and the Green Party as ministers."
